PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF TENSILE METALLIC MEMBERS STRENGTHENED WITH FRP

  • Adhesively bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates for strengthening deteriorated metallic members demonstrate several advantages over traditional retrofit methods. The bonding stress between FRP and metallic members affects the load transfer and the effectiveness of strengthening. Based on the differential equations of force equilibrium, stress analysis of a tensile metallic member with double symmetric bonded FRP was conducted, and the distribution of the shear stress through the thickness of the repaired member was derived. The calculating formula of bonding stress between FRP and metallic member was derived and the effective bond length of FRP was obtained. Tests of steel plates with double symmetric bonded carbon fiber sheets were conducted under static loading. The shear stress between carbon fiber sheets and steel plate was considered. The effective bonded length of carbon fiber sheet was also analyzed. The computed results using these formulas were in good agreement with the experimental ones and the calculating methods were validated.
