TRANSIENT LATERAL RESPONSE OF A FINITE PILE IN HOMOGENEOUS SOIL

  • Transient lateral response of pile subjected to lateral impulse load at the pile head is studied. The pile is assumed to be a Bernoulli-Euler beam of finite length, and the soil around the pile is treated as Winkler foundation. Transfer function and response to unit pulse are derived by direct and inverse Laplace transforms, respectively. Frequency response function, frequency-domain and time-domain expressions for the lateral vibration velocity at the pile head are obtained. The transient lateral response of the pile is compared with the transient axial one. The effects of the pile length, the velocity of shear wave of the soil and the duration of lateral impulse load at the pile head on the transient lateral dynamic response are investigated. The attenuation factor of flexural wave in the pile is also analyzed.
