ROBUSTNESS STUDY OF MULTIPLE TUNED MASS DAMPERS FOR FLUTTER CONTROL OF BRIDGE BASED ON MULTI-MODE COUPLED FLUTTER THEORY

  • Based on multi-mode coupled flutter theory and modal coordinates of the structure the differential equations of flutter motion for bridge with multiple tuned mass dampers(MTMD)are established in this paper. Generalized displacement and velocity vectors of the system are taken as the state-space vectors and the differential equations are transformed into the state-space equations. The bridge flutter problem with MTMD becomes a generalized eigenvalue problem of asymmetrical real matrix. A program for flutter analysis of the bridge with MTMD is also developed and parametric study is performed. Numerical examples of the Yamen cable-stayed bridge are given to investigate the effectiveness and robustness of the MTMD for bridge flutter control. Results show that the MTMD has better robust performance than the conventional tuned mass damper.
