A METHOD FOR ESTIMATING DIRECTIONAL EXTREME-WIND SPEEDS IN ZONES OF NORMAL CLIMATES

  • The estimation of directional extreme-wind speeds is the foundational requirement of accurately estimating the wind loading of structures. However, the research in this area is still not enough. Especially, the studies on the correlation among extreme-wind speeds in different wind directions are scarce. In this paper, Cook's method of independent storm (MIS) is improved first to make it suitable for estimating directional extreme-wind speeds in the zones of normal climates. Subsequently, the asymptotic independence of normal wind speeds in different wind directions is confirmed by using tail correlation theory. Based on these studies, a new method for estimating directional extreme-wind speeds is proposed. The estimated results in Nanjing area are presented and discussed as an example.
