TORSIONALLY COUPLED VIBRATION CONTROL OF ECCENTRIC BUILDINGS USING TUNED LIQUID DAMPERS

  • This paper focuses on the seismic response control of eccentric structures by use of tuned liquid dampers. The equation of motion for the control system is derived and the solving method for the equation is presented. An 8-story eccentric steel building, with two tuned liquid column dampers on the orthogonal direction and one circular tuned liquid column damper on the mass center of the top story, is analyzed. Based on the proposed objective function, the optimal parameters of liquid dampers are optimized by Genetic Algorithm. The structural responses with and without liquid dampers subjected to bi-directional earthquakes in different site conditions are analyzed in the time domain. The results show that the torsionally coupled responses of structures can be effectively suppressed by liquid dampers with optimal parameters.
