IMPACTS OF TRANSVERSE PRESSURE ON BOND CAPABILITY OF BARS IN CONCRETE

  • It has been generally accepted in practice to terminate bars in compression zone, but whether or not such a treatment benefits the bond capacity is questionable. This paper evaluates the impacts of stress fields under transverse pressure on the bond capacity. To do that, Airy stress function was set for concrete and steel bars respectively. And then, combing the physical and geometrical equations, the paper deduced the displacement fields near the interface. Supplementing the interface compatibility conditions, coefficients can be determined, hence stress fields and stress concentration factors of interface were obtained. Through numerical examinations, the analytical solution was found to be reasonably accurate, thus it can be used to determine the characteristics of the stress field near the interface of concrete and steel bars when pull-out specimens is subjected to transverse pressure. Finally, based on the proposed solution of this paper, the impacts of transverse pressure on the bond capacity were analyzed, and the maximum limit of transverse pressure was proposed.
