SOLUTION OF THE VERTICAL DISPLACEMENT OF REINFORCED FOUNDATION

  • Mindlins solution for surface displacement due to a horizontal point load at a depth is integrated to calculate the vertical displacement of reinforced foundation. The effects on settlement of length and depth of reinforcement are investigated. It is shown that more pronounced settlement reductions result at the edges of foundation and the best reduction effect is achieved when the reinforcement has a length of 1.0 to 2.0 times the width of foundation. It is suggested that the first layer be located at a depth less than 0.25 times the width of foundation and the rest at a depth less than 1.0 times the width of the foundation. The results are believed to be useful in estimating settlement reductions of foundation due to reinforcement.
