EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON THE BEHAVIOR AND CAPACITY OF CONCRETE FILLED STAINLESS STEEL TUBE SHORT COLUMNS

  • The loading capacity of nine concrete filled austenitic stainless-steel tube short columns and nine concrete filled duplex stainless-steel tube short columns for their axial compression tests were investigated. The ultimate load-bearing capacity, longitudinal strains, and circumferential strains were tested, and emphatically investigated the influence of bearing capacity of the short columns. In addition, the design codes of common concrete filled steel tubes for European Code (Eurocode 4), American Code (ACI 318-99), Japanese Code (AIJ-CFT), Chinese Code DBJ 13-51-2003, DL/T 5085-1999 and CECS 28:2012 were referred to calculating the bearing capacity of concrete filled stainless steel tube short columns, and analyzed the differences between tests and calculating results. The results indicate that:under the condition of the same strength of core concrete, the bearing capacity of the member increases with the increase of steel tube wall thickness under the same strength grade of core concrete, and the strength of concrete also has an effect on the capacity. The calculating results of the six codes for concrete filled stainless steel tube short columns are rather safe. The result of CECS 28:2012 code is closer to that of the test. Thusly, the research results can provide a reference for the design of concrete filled stainless steel tube short columns.
