RESEARCH ON EXPERIMENTAL PROPERTIES OF NOVEL HIGH DAMPING VISCOELASTIC DAMPERS

  • This paper mainly presents an experimental study on three high damping viscoelastic dampers (VED). The maximum shear stress, storage shear modulus and equivalent viscous damping ratio were measured under different loading schemes to study the regularity of the viscoelastic damper properties. The dependency of the mechanical properties of the dampers on strain and loading frequency were studied. Fatigue test and aging test were also conducted. The hysteretic behaviour of the viscoelastic damper was carried out to do comparative research on the simulated and experimental results. It is concluded that these dampers exhibit full hysteresis loops and stable mechanical properties. The viscoelastic dampers exhibit good deformation properties and energy dissipation capacity, and their equivalent viscous damping ratios are higher. It is also found that the anti-fatigue property is excellent, and the anti-aging property is favorable. The dependency of the damper's mechanical properties on strain is obvious, while that on frequency is relatively small. The simulated results using Bouc-Wen model are consistent with the experimental results.
