MECHANISMS AND CALCULATION OF PILE-RUN FOR LONG AND LARGE DIAMETER PILES

  • Super long and large diameter piles are commonly used foundations for ocean structure platforms. Pile-run phenomena frequently take place due to massive weight of both the pile and the hammer. In this study, a practical case was used to discuss the mechanisms of pile-run, and a corresponding method for estimating soil resistance during pile-run was proposed. The shaft friction was calculated by using the remould soil strength and the pile-end bearing capacity was evaluated using the ЪерезанцевВe- formula. By comparing the soil resistance with the total weight of the pile and the hammer, the equilibrium condition of pile run was established. The proposed method was used to predict pile-run in a project in the South China Sea, and the calculated results agreed well with the observed data. This study is expected to provide valuable information for designers of pile foundations in ocean engineering.
